Safety documents for welding and boilermaking work in Queensland
Welding and boilermaking mix fire, fumes, enclosed vessels and heavy steel. Where the job is construction work, section 291 of the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (Qld) makes it high risk if it is carried out in or near a confined space, is carried out in an area that may have a contaminated or flammable atmosphere, or involves a risk of falling more than 2 m. A SWMS is then required before it starts (section 299).
Confined spaces, fumes and pressure equipment
Tanks and vessels can be confined spaces, and where they are, sections 62 to 77 apply. You must not direct a worker to enter one without a written confined space entry permit completed by a competent person that states the space, who may enter, the time period and the controls (section 67). You must also ensure no one is exposed to an airborne concentration over the exposure standard (section 49), and arrange air monitoring when you are not certain on reasonable grounds whether the standard is exceeded, or when monitoring is needed to find out whether there is a risk to health (section 50).
Schedule 5 lists some pressure equipment, boilers and pressure vessels for design or plant registration (sections 243 and 246). The Welding Processes Code of Practice 2021 and the Abrasive Blasting Code of Practice 2021 are approved codes in Queensland.
