Safety documents for manufacturing and machine shops in Queensland
Running a lathe, press brake or conveyor in a factory is not construction work, so a safe work method statement (SWMS) is only legally required for high risk construction work (ss 291 and 299 of the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (Qld)), for example installing or dismantling plant as part of fitting out a structure. A written SWMS or safe work procedure is still a sound way to control machine hazards, set up isolation and train new operators.
Rules that come up in manufacturing
Guarding: where guarding controls plant risks, it must generally be a permanently fixed barrier if access is not needed during operation, maintenance or cleaning, or an interlocked barrier if it is (s 208). That matters for presses, guillotines and conveyors.Engineered stone: a person conducting a business or undertaking must not carry out, or direct or allow a worker to carry out, work that involves manufacturing, supplying, processing or installing engineered stone benchtops, panels or slabs (s 529D), subject to the exemption process in the Regulation.
