Safety documents for air conditioning work in Queensland
Air conditioning jobs put you on roofs, in ceiling spaces and beside electrical supply and refrigerant lines. When the job is construction work (section 289 of the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (Qld) covers fitting-out, repair and maintenance of a structure, but not testing, maintenance or repair work of a minor nature), section 291 makes it high risk construction work if it involves a risk of falling more than 2 m, is carried out on or near chemical, fuel or refrigerant lines, or is carried out on or near energised electrical installations. Section 299 then requires a safe work method statement (SWMS) before the work starts.
Electrical work sits under its own Act
Electrical safety is covered by the Electrical Safety Act 2002 (Qld) (see schedule 1, section 4 of the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Qld)). Electrical work includes connecting electricity supply wiring to electrical equipment or disconnecting it from electrical equipment (section 18), and performing or supervising electrical work needs an electrical work licence (section 55). Both the definition and the licence requirement have exclusions and exceptions, so check them against your job, and say in your SWMS who makes the electrical connection.
