Safety documents for fire safety and hot work in Queensland

Fire-related jobs include hot work such as welding and cutting, which creates a fire risk, and the emergency planning that gets people out when something goes wrong. Section 291 of the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (Qld) does not name hot work, but it does list construction work that is in an area that may have a flammable atmosphere (l), is in or near a confined space (f), involves a risk of falling more than 2 m (a), or is on or near chemical, fuel or refrigerant lines (j). Where one applies, a SWMS is required before the work starts (section 299).

Emergency plans

A business must ensure an emergency plan is prepared for each workplace, maintained, and implemented in an emergency (section 43 of the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (Qld)). The plan must provide for emergency procedures (an effective response, evacuation, notifying emergency services at the earliest opportunity, medical treatment and assistance, and communication between the person authorised to coordinate the response and everyone at the workplace), testing of the procedures, and information, training and instruction for relevant workers.
