Safety documents for building and carpentry work in Queensland

Building and carpentry mean height, power tools, plant and dust. Section 291 of the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (Qld) makes construction work high risk if it involves a risk of falling more than 2 m, structural alterations or repairs that need temporary support to prevent collapse, work in or near a trench deeper than 1.5 m, or tilt-up or precast concrete. A SWMS is then required before the work starts (section 299).

Falls and dust

Queensland has detailed fall rules for construction work in sections 306B to 306J. For housing construction work the dividing line is a possible fall of 3 m, and for other construction work it is 2 m. At or above the line you must use controls that prevent a fall or, if that is not practicable, arrest it (section 306D); below it you must still identify fall hazards, assess the risk and use controls (section 306C). Ladders have their own rules in sections 306K to 306M.

Cutting or grinding concrete, brick or stone can release crystalline silica dust. Chapter 8A requires the processing of a crystalline silica substance, such as cutting or grinding it with a power tool, to be controlled (section 529C), and work involving engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs is prohibited, with limited exceptions (sections 529D to 529F).
