About this template

For vehicle repairers, fabricators, joinery shops and industrial painters who spray in booths. It follows the work from product planning and the booth airflow check through ignition source control, mixing, spraying and flash-off to cleaning, filter changes and pack-up.

Spray painting in a booth is not construction work by itself. A SWMS is legally required under WHS Regulation s 299 only for high risk construction work, so otherwise this works as a written safe work procedure or task risk assessment. If the work is high risk construction work, tick the reg 291 items that apply, for example a contaminated or flammable atmosphere.

What Is Covered In Our Spray Painting Booth SWMS?

The job steps run in the order the work is done, from pre-start checks to finishing up. The hazards and controls include:

  • Solvent vapour and paint mist inhalation
  • Isocyanate sensitisation and occupational asthma
  • Booth extraction or filters failing
  • Fire and explosion from solvent vapour
  • Static discharge during mixing and spraying
  • Skin and eye contact with paint and hardener
  • Respirator fit and air supply failure
  • Solvent-soaked rags and spent filters
  • Noise from compressed air and extraction
  • Manual handling of articles into the booth
  • Slips on overspray and wet grating
  • Fumes released when the booth is opened too soon

High Risk Construction Work

No high risk construction work items (WHS Regulation 2011 (Qld) s 291) are pre-ticked, because this work is not high risk construction work by itself. Tick the items that apply to your job, such as a fall risk of more than 2 metres or work where powered mobile plant is moving.
