About this template

Suits electricians, handymen and maintenance crews who install and test smoke alarms in houses and units. It covers inspecting the dwelling, isolating power for hard-wired alarms, ladders, drilling, fitting and interconnecting alarms, and testing. Ceiling-space entry and fixed wiring use separate SWMS.

Installing a smoke alarm is not high risk construction work by itself, so a SWMS is not usually legally required for it under WHS Regulation s 299; this document works as a written safe work procedure or task risk assessment. Hard-wired connection is electrical work that must be done by a licensed electrician. Tick the relevant item if your job involves asbestos disturbance, work on or near energised electrical installations or a fall of more than 2 metres (WHS Regulation s 291). Check the current Fire Services Act 1990 and Building Fire Safety Regulation 2008 before relying on the smoke alarm requirements, because some provisions are time-limited.
