About this template
Suits roof cleaning and exterior cleaning businesses that pressure clean tile, metal and concrete roofs. It covers roof inspection, asbestos checks, power lines and water entry, edge protection, the pressure cleaner, slippery surfaces, injection injuries, runoff, mould and droppings, and pack-up.
Roof pressure cleaning on its own is not clearly high risk construction work: WHS Regulation s 289 lists maintenance and repair of a structure but not cleaning, and excludes only maintenance or repair of a minor nature. A SWMS is required by law only for high risk construction work (WHS Regulation s 299), so no item is ticked for you; otherwise this works as a written safe work procedure and task risk assessment. If your job is construction work, for example the cleaning is part of a roof restoration or repair, or you decide it counts as maintenance of a structure, tick the items that apply, such as a fall of more than 2 metres or work near energised electrical services.

What Is Covered In Our Roof Pressure Cleaning SWMS?
The job steps run in the order the work is done, from pre-start checks to finishing up. The hazards and controls include:
- Slips on wet and mossy roofs
- Falls from roof edges
- Falls through fragile sheets and skylights
- High-pressure injection through the skin
- Hose or coupling failure under pressure
- Water entering switchboards, solar wiring and ceilings
- Contact with overhead power lines
- Pressure cleaning asbestos cement roofs
- Chemicals, moss killers and fuel
- Runoff and slurry into drains
- Mould spores and bird droppings
- Noise, heat and fatigue
High Risk Construction Work
No high risk construction work items (WHS Regulation 2011 (Qld) s 291) are pre-ticked, because this work is not high risk construction work by itself. Tick the items that apply to your job, such as a fall risk of more than 2 metres or work where powered mobile plant is moving.
Licences, Training and Competency
- General construction induction training card (white card) where the job is construction work, for example cleaning done as part of a roof restoration or repair
- Operator trained and assessed as competent on the pressure cleaner and lance, including trigger lock, pressure release and the injection risk
- Training in the roof fall controls used on the job (edge protection, travel restraint or a fall arrest harness system) and in the rescue procedure (WHS Regulation s 80)
- No high risk work licence is needed for pressure cleaning or roof work; a licence is needed only for a boom-type elevating work platform with a boom length of 11 m or more (Schedule 3, item 21)
- Workers the PCBU reasonably believes may be involved in asbestos removal work or asbestos-related work are trained in the identification and safe handling of asbestos and ACM (WHS Regulation s 445); everyone else stops and reports anything that may be asbestos
- Training in the hazards of the cleaning chemicals used, and in first aid for chemical splashes and high-pressure injection injuries
- First aid equipment, facilities and trained first aiders (or access to them) as the work needs (WHS Regulation s 42)
