About this template

Suits flooring installers and builders laying vinyl planks and hybrid rigid-core planks, click-lock or glue-down, in homes and commercial fit-outs. It follows the work from the site and subfloor check through cutting, laying and trims to clean-up. It does not cover timber and laminate floors.

Vinyl plank installation is not high risk construction work by itself. Under the WHS Regulation s 299 a SWMS is required before high risk construction work starts, for example if old flooring that may contain asbestos is disturbed or there is a risk of falling more than 2 m; tick those items if they apply. Otherwise the document works as a written safe work procedure and task risk assessment.

What Is Covered In Our Vinyl and Hybrid Plank Flooring Installation SWMS?

After the standard pre-start checks, the job steps run from “Plan the job and inspect the site, subfloor and existing floor” to “Clean up, remove waste and hand over”. The hazards and controls include:

  • Suspect asbestos in old vinyl, backing and adhesive
  • Dust from cutting rigid-core and vinyl planks
  • Silica and levelling compound dust from subfloor preparation
  • Solvent fumes from glue-down adhesives
  • Fire from ignition sources near adhesives
  • Knife and saw cuts
  • Kneeling and low work strains
  • Heavy cartons and manual handling
  • Noise from saws and grinders
  • Slips on adhesive and offcuts
  • Struck fingers from tapping blocks and mallets
  • Nail gun and stapler injuries on trims

High Risk Construction Work

None of the high risk construction work items (WHS Regulation 2011 (Qld) s 291) are pre-ticked, because this job is not high risk construction work by itself. Tick any that apply on your site.

Licences, Training and Competency

  • General construction induction training card (white card) for construction work (installing floor coverings is fitting-out work)
  • Site induction
  • Installers trained and experienced in the plank system, adhesive and tools; apprentices and new workers supervised by an experienced installer
  • Training in the SDS for each adhesive, primer and levelling compound, including the gloves and respirator it calls for
  • Fit test and training for each wearer of a tight-fitting respirator
  • Asbestos awareness so installers recognise suspect material in older buildings (old vinyl sheet or tiles, backing and adhesive), stop work and report it; training under WHS Regulation s 445 for workers who may be involved in asbestos removal work or asbestos-related work
  • Training in nail gun or stapler use if used
  • First aid kit on the job and people trained in first aid (WHS Regulation s 42)
