About this template

For steel erectors and builders who erect columns, beams, rafters, purlins and bracing for steel frame buildings. It follows the work in order, from the erection plan and site setup through lifting and landing members, connecting at height, bolting up, daily stability checks and handover. Crane operation and general rigging and dogging need their own SWMS.

Structural steel erection is high risk construction work because of the risk of a fall of more than 2 metres (item 0 in the tool) and the movement of powered mobile plant such as cranes, EWPs and delivery trucks (item 14), so both are ticked for you, which is why a SWMS is required under WHS Regulation s 299. Tick item 10 as well if the work is on or near energised overhead lines or services (s 291(k)), and item 13 if the site is beside a road open to traffic. Item 4 (temporary support to prevent collapse) applies to structural alterations or repairs, not to erecting a new frame.

  • Dropped tools, bolts and members
  • Loads slipping from slings or swinging into riggers
  • Crane and EWP overturning
  • Contact with overhead power lines
  • Struck by delivery trucks and mobile plant
  • Falls from rafters while fitting purlins and girts
  • Hearing loss and strain from impact tools
  • Heat, wind and wet steel
  • People walking under steelwork being erected

High Risk Construction Work

These high risk construction work items (WHS Regulation 2011 (Qld) s 291) are already ticked because they are part of this work. Tick any others that apply to your job:

  • High risk work licence for the class of crane in use, held by the crane operator (covered by the separate crane SWMS)
  • High risk work licence for a boom-type elevating work platform with a boom length of 11 metres or more; training and verified competency for any other EWP or scissor lift
  • High risk work licence for the scaffolding class where a scaffold from which a person could fall more than 4 metres is built; trainees work under a licence holder’s supervision
  • A competent person, named in the job plan, to verify the stability of the partly erected structure
  • Engineer’s written advice or certification for lifting brackets, fabricated work platforms, rigger’s posts and static lines, and any change to bolts or holes
  • Competent person to inspect and approve fall arrest anchorage points before first use (WHS Regulation s 306I) and workers trained in the fall arrest rescue procedure
