About this template
For grain growers, harvest contractors and header operators. It follows the work from the pre-start check and paddock plan to fitting the header, harvesting, clearing blockages, fire controls, refuelling, road transport and shutdown.
Header operation is not construction work, so no high risk construction work item is pre-ticked and a SWMS is not legally required for it (WHS Regulation s 299 applies to high risk construction work); the document works as a written safe work procedure or task risk assessment. If the work is part of construction work, tick any reg 291 item that applies, for example work in an area where powered mobile plant moves (item o) or work on or near energised electrical installations or services (item k).

What Is Covered In Our Header Operation SWMS?
The job steps run in the order the work is done, from pre-start checks to finishing up. The hazards and controls include:
- Entanglement in the reel, auger and knife
- Contact with overhead power lines
- Header falling during servicing
- Rollover on slopes and soft ground
- Run-over of ground workers
- Crop and machine fires
- Hydraulic hose burst and oil injection
- Collision on roads with a wide load
- Cuts from the knife
- Noise, dust and fatigue
High Risk Construction Work
No high risk construction work items (WHS Regulation 2011 (Qld) s 291) are pre-ticked, because this work is not high risk construction work by itself. Tick the items that apply to your job, such as a fall risk of more than 2 metres or work where powered mobile plant is moving.
Licences, Training and Competency
- Training and verified competency in operating the harvester and header, including guards and isolation
- Driver licence and any registration or permit needed to take the machine or header on a road
- Induction on the property, including no-go areas, overhead lines and fire plans
