About this template

Suits carpenters, joiners and stair builders who build, lift and fix timber or steel stairs in new buildings and renovations. It follows the job from measuring and planning through protecting the stairwell, temporary access, handling heavy components, cutting, fixing and finishing.

Stair construction is not high risk construction work by itself, so no item is ticked. A SWMS is legally required under WHS Regulation s 299 when the stair work involves a high risk item; tick the fall item (s 291(a)) when a stairwell void or open edge could drop someone more than 2 metres, which is common between storeys, and any other item the job involves, such as powered mobile plant when a crane or forklift works in the area. Otherwise it works as a written safe work procedure and task risk assessment. Balustrades and general carpentry need a separate SWMS.

What Is Covered In Our Stair Construction SWMS?

  • Falls from ladders and temporary stairs

  • Nail gun discharge
  • Timber dust and silica dust from stone or tile
  • Noise from saws and compressors
  • Electric shock from tools and leads
  • Adhesive, sealer and solvent exposure
  • Slips on finished treads
