About this template

Suits hydraulic hose shops, mobile hose services, mechanical workshops and plant maintenance teams that cut, assemble, crimp and test hose assemblies. It follows the job from matching the hose, fitting and die, through cutting, cleaning, crimping and inspecting to pressure testing and pack-up. Relieving pressure on machines is covered by the Hydraulic System Maintenance and Stored Energy SWMS, and replacing a hose on a machine by the Hydraulic Hose Replacement and High Pressure Injection Safe Work Procedure.

Hose assembly and crimping is workshop and service work, not high risk construction work by itself, so no item is pre-ticked. A SWMS is legally required under WHS Regulation s 299 only for high risk construction work. If your job is construction work, for example hose work on a construction site, tick the items that apply, such as movement of powered mobile plant in the work area (s 291(o)) or work on or near energised electrical installations or services (s 291(k)). Otherwise it works as a written safe work procedure and task risk assessment.

What Is Covered In Our Hydraulic Hose Assembly and Crimping SWMS?

After the standard pre-start checks, the job steps run from “Plan the job and set up the hose assembly area” to “Pack up, store assemblies and record the work”. The hazards and controls include:

  • Crush injuries at the crimper dies
  • High pressure fluid injection into the skin
  • Hose burst and whip during pressure testing
  • Wrong hose, fitting or die combinations
  • Cut-off saw contact and wheel breakage
  • Compressed air and cleaning projectiles
  • Wire ends and sharp fittings cutting hands
  • Machines starting during die and blade changes
  • Stored pressure in power packs and lines
  • Oil and solvent spills, slips and fire
  • Dust, solvents and noise
  • Heavy reels, dies and fittings

High Risk Construction Work

None of the high risk construction work items (WHS Regulation 2011 (Qld) s 291) are pre-ticked, because this job is not high risk construction work by itself. Tick any that apply on your site.

Licences, Training and Competency

  • Training and verified competency in hydraulic hose assembly, in matching hoses, fittings and dies, and in the crimping machine used (maker or supplier training, or equivalent)
  • Training in the site’s isolation (lock-out) procedure for the crimper, hose saw and power packs
  • Training in high pressure fluid injection injuries and what to do after one: get urgent medical care
  • Training in the SDS and safe handling of hydraulic oil, solvents and cleaning products
  • Competent person to maintain and test the crimper, hose saw and test stand to the maker’s recommendations (WHS Regulation s 213)
  • Licensed electrical worker for any repair of electrical equipment above extra low voltage on the machines (Electrical Safety Act 2002 ss 14 and 55)
  • No high risk work licence class covers hose assembly or crimping (WHS Regulation Schedule 3)
