About this template
For poultry catching crews, contractors, growers and processors who catch, crate and load birds, often at night. It follows the job from biosecurity checks and shed set-up through catching and crating, dust and ammonia control, carrying crates, forklift and truck loading, wound and infection control and night fatigue, to decontamination at the end. Cleaning out the empty shed is covered by a separate SWMS.
Poultry catching and loading is rural work, not high risk construction work, so a SWMS is legally required only if the work is part of high risk construction work (WHS Regulation s 299). Otherwise this works as a written safe work procedure and task risk assessment, and no item is pre-ticked. If the work is part of construction work, tick the items that apply.

What Is Covered In Our Poultry Catching and Loading SWMS?
After the standard pre-start checks, the job steps run from “Plan the catch, check biosecurity and brief the crew” to “Check the shed is clear, decontaminate and hand over”. The hazards and controls include:
- Ammonia and organic dust in the shed air
- Mould spores and endotoxins from litter
- Strains from repeated catching and crate carrying
- Scratches, pecks and infected wounds
- Q fever, avian influenza and psittacosis
- Forklift collisions with people on foot
- Falls from truck decks and crate stacks
- Crates falling from stacks and forks
- Exhaust fumes in closed sheds
- Night work fatigue and tired driving
- Heat in warm, humid sheds
- Working alone in a remote shed at night
High Risk Construction Work
None of the high risk construction work items (WHS Regulation 2011 (Qld) s 291) are pre-ticked, because this job is not high risk construction work by itself. Tick any that apply on your site.
