About this template
Suits mobile tyre fitters and service vans that change tyres at the roadside, on farms, depots and work sites. It follows the job in order: planning, traffic set-up, securing the vehicle and checking the ground, wheel removal, deflation and handling, bead breaking and fitting, inflation, refit and torque, noise and chemicals, weather and lone work, and pack-up. Workshop tyre fitting needs a separate SWMS.
Mobile tyre service is not high risk construction work, so no item is pre-ticked and a SWMS is required by law only for high risk construction work (WHS Regulation s 299). If the work is part of construction work, such as on a road or traffic corridor in use, tick the reg 291 items that apply. Otherwise the document works as a written safe work procedure and task risk assessment that you tailor to your service.

What Is Covered In Our Mobile Tyre Service SWMS?
The job steps run in the order the work is done, from pre-start checks to finishing up. The hazards and controls include:
- Being struck by passing traffic
- Service vehicle parked in a traffic lane
- Vehicle falling from the jack
- Soft or sloping ground
- Heavy wheel handling and back injury
- Tyre and rim explosion during inflation
- Bead breaker and tyre lever crush injuries
- Wheel nuts not torqued correctly
- Noise from compressors and impact guns
- Tyre lubricant, sealant and fuel
- Heat, rain and night work
- Working alone at remote jobs
High Risk Construction Work
No high risk construction work items (WHS Regulation 2011 (Qld) s 291) are pre-ticked, because this work is not high risk construction work by itself. Tick the items that apply to your job, such as a fall risk of more than 2 metres or work where powered mobile plant is moving.
Licences, Training and Competency
- Tyre fitter trained and assessed as competent in changing and inflating the tyre types serviced (passenger, light truck, truck and, if offered, earthmover), including split and multi-piece rims where applicable
- Training in the service vehicle’s tyre machine, balancer, compressor and any crane or lifting aid fitted
- Training in safe roadside and on-site working, including temporary traffic control as the site or road manager requires
- Driver licence for the class of service vehicle, and the road rules for stopping and working beside a road
- Trained first aider available, with first aid provided as s 42 of the WHS Regulation requires, and a first aid kit in the vehicle
- Site induction on each client site (mine and quarry sites have their own rules: see the mining laws)
- Training in the hazardous chemicals carried (tyre lubricant, sealant, fuel for the generator: SDS read)
