About this template
For grain growers, contractors, feedlots and storage operators who run PTO, engine or electric grain augers. It follows the work from the pre-start check and power line check to moving, raising, running, clearing blockages and shutting down.
Grain auger operation is not construction work, so no high risk construction work item is pre-ticked and a SWMS is not legally required for it (WHS Regulation s 299 applies to high risk construction work); the document works as a written safe work procedure or task risk assessment. If the work is part of construction work, tick any reg 291 item that applies, for example work on or near energised electrical installations or services (item k).

What Is Covered In Our Grain Auger Operation SWMS?
The job steps run in the order the work is done, from pre-start checks to finishing up. The hazards and controls include:
- Entanglement in flighting and PTO shafts
- Contact with overhead power lines
- Auger tipping or collapsing when raised
- Crush when moving and hitching the auger
- Entrapment at the hopper or intake
- Unexpected start-up during blockage clearing
- Grain dust inhalation
- Electric shock from motors and leads
- Noise exposure
- Fatigue during harvest
High Risk Construction Work
No high risk construction work items (WHS Regulation 2011 (Qld) s 291) are pre-ticked, because this work is not high risk construction work by itself. Tick the items that apply to your job, such as a fall risk of more than 2 metres or work where powered mobile plant is moving.
Licences, Training and Competency
- Training and verified competency in operating the auger, including guards, isolation and moving the auger
- Licensed electrical worker for any electrical wiring or repairs
- Driver licence and any registration needed to tow the auger on a road
- Induction on the property or site, including no-go areas and overhead line locations
