About this template

Suits tyre shops, truck workshops, fleet operators and mobile tyre fitters who change and inflate heavy vehicle and truck tyres. It covers setting up, raising the vehicle, deflating, rim inspection, bead work, caged inflation, refitting wheels and handling tyres.

Tyre fitting is not high risk construction work by itself, so no high risk construction work items are pre-ticked. A SWMS is required by law only for high risk construction work (WHS Regulation s 299); tick the items that apply, such as work on or near a road in use, if the job is part of construction work. Otherwise it works as a written safe work procedure and risk assessment.

What Is Covered In Our Heavy Tyre Changing and Inflation SWMS?

The job steps run in the order the work is done, from pre-start checks to finishing up. The hazards and controls include:

  • Explosive separation of rim and lock ring on inflation
  • Tyre burst from damaged or over-inflated tyres
  • Vehicle falling off jacks and stands
  • Wheel falling or rolling when fitted
  • Crush from bead breakers and tyre levers
  • Mixed or damaged split rim parts
  • Loose wheel nuts after refit
  • Strains lifting heavy tyres
  • Hearing loss from air release and impact tools
  • Roadside traffic and heat exposure

High Risk Construction Work

No high risk construction work items (WHS Regulation 2011 (Qld) s 291) are pre-ticked, because this work is not high risk construction work by itself. Tick the items that apply to your job, such as a fall risk of more than 2 metres or work where powered mobile plant is moving.

Licences, Training and Competency

  • Trained and competent in heavy tyre fitting and inflation for the tyre and rim types handled, verified by the PCBU
  • Induction in this SWMS and the site rules
  • No high risk work licence class applies to tyre fitting or inflation; a forklift, crane or hoist used to move wheels needs the Schedule 3 class for it, and slinging a wheel for a lift needs the dogging class
  • First aider on site or within reach
